According to the World Health Organization, The United Nations defines violence against women as any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life (WHO Fact Sheet, 2016, para. 1).† There are many terms used to describe violence. The term domestic violence usually refers to interpersonal violence in a domestic setting such as family or intimate relationships. This can occur between man and woman, parent and child, siblings and same sex partners (Flood Fergus, n.d). There are nine different types of violence perpetrated against women. These include physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, verbal, spiritual, cultural, financial and abuse (Violence prevention initiative, 2015). Violence against women can happen anywhere such as in the home, the work place, at school, in jail s and prisons, in stores, in medical facilities and even in churches or places of worship. There is no place that is exempt from violence as you expect there should be. Domestic violence affects people of all race, religion, financial backgrounds and educational levels (US Department of Justice, 2016). Young children who experience domestic violence in their lives are more likely to be abusive in their own relationships, but most do not (Flood Fergus, n.d).
